Refilling HP 23 color cartridge.

I refilled my HP 23 color cartridge before the ink ran out to prevent refilling problems. The cartridge worked good for about 35 pages, then the yellow quit working. The print head is not clogged. I reprimed the cartridge and reset the ink levels in the cartridge by putting tape on the top 4 contacts of the cartridge. This also happen on a previous cartridge only with cyan. Had to buy a new cartridge. Any ideas on what is happening.Thanks!!!!!
